Featured Travel : Japan Weather Guide

Japan has always been my dream destination to visit. But so far, been keep aside further in my bucket list. Reason why? maybe because I haven't done much research about this beautiful country or simply can't decided which part of Japan I must conquered first. 

I always told my friend when asked about TIPS on traveling that  One of the first things to decide when you’re planning any tour is what time of year offers the best experience of your destination country. That decision is particularly tricky when the country or countries you’re planning to visit have a completely different climate to what you’re used to.

New Year is one of Japan's three major travel seasons with intensive domestic and international travel activity. Many shops, restaurants and tourist attractions are closed for at least one day between December 29 and January 4. Read more about visiting Japan during New Year.

The remainder of January is a good time for visiting Japan, as the weather is usually sunny and dry and sightseeing spots are not crowded. Only in northern Japan and along the Sea of Japan coast, there is lots of snowfall, and conditions are good for winter sports. The downside of a visit in winter are the relatively short days (sunset is around 5pm in Tokyo) and the vegetation's barren state.

February

Like January, February is a good time for visiting Japan as the weather is usually sunny and dry and sightseeing spots are not crowded. The downside of a visit in winter are the relatively short days (sunset is around 5:30pm in Tokyo) and the vegetation's barren state.

Northern Japan and the Sea of Japan coast receive lots of snowfall. At the peak of winter, February tends to be the best time for winter sports and viewing winter sceneries, such as the drift ice off Hokkaido and the snow covered farm houses of Shirakawago.

Early flowering plants and trees, such as plum trees, deliver the first signs of spring, while the weather is getting noticeably milder. Towards the end of March the cherry blossom season starts in certain regions, while in northern Japan conditions are still good for winter sports. Domestic travel activity increases in the second half of March due to spring school holidays.

Besides November, April is often considered the best time to visit Japan because the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in most regions of the country and the weather is pleasantly mild. Domestic travel activity is increased in early April due to spring school holidays, in late April due to the start of the Golden Week and during most of the rest of the month due the cherry blossom season.

Golden Week, one of Japan's busiest travel seasons, takes place in the end of April and beginning of May and can be the cause of various travel related concerns.

However, the remainder of May is one of the best times for visiting Japan, as the vegetation has become lush, the temperatures are still comfortable and tourists spots tend to be pleasantly uncrowded. In Hokkaido, the progress of spring is delayed by about one month compared to Tokyo. At the other end of the country, in Okinawa, the rainy season (tsuyu) typically lasts from early May to mid June.

From the beginning of June, the rainy season (tsuyu) visits most parts of Japan except Hokkaido. While it does not rain every day, the weather tends to be overcast and dreary. The duration and intensity of the rainy season can vary quite strongly from year to year.

Hot spring resorts like Hakone and the wooded temple mountain Koyasan are some places that can be quite attractive in rainy weather. Hokkaido is an attractive destination in June as it is least affected by the rainy season. Also, the weather in Okinawa takes a dramatic turn to the better after the end of the rainy season there in late June.

The rainy season (tsuyu) typically ends in the first half of July. It is hot and humid in most of Japan, and just standing outdoors can make you sweat. The conditions are more comfortable in higher elevations and in Hokkaido, a highly popular destination among outdoor lovers during the summer months.

Many local festivals and fireworks are held. Mount Fuji is opened for climbing. Cormorant fishing can be observed. It is also a very good time of the year for beach holidays in Okinawa. With the summer school holidays from late July through August, domestic travel activity increases considerably.

August is hot and humid in most of Japan. The conditions are more comfortable in higher elevations and in Hokkaido, a highly popular destination among outdoor lovers during the summer months. Many local festivals and fireworks are held in August. Travel activity is high during the entire month due to summer school holidays, but is especially intensive during the Obon week in mid August.

September ~ Beware of Typhoon

The typhoon season reaches its peak in August and September. Typhoons usually hit the coasts of Okinawa, Kyushu and Shikoku and cause strong rain and wind in wide parts or all of Japan for about two days. Luckily, typhoons are often followed by perfectly clear weather. The weather in September can still be quite hot and humid, but the crowds of August have mostly disappeared.

October ~ The best time to visit

October is one of the most pleasant months for traveling in Japan as the weather remains warm, but is not hot and humid anymore. Trees begin turning colors in the northern regions and higher elevations.

November

November is one of the best times to visit Japan, as the weather is relatively dry and mild, and the autumn colors are spectacular in many parts of the country. Travel activity tends to be low except around popular autumn leaf spots.

December is a good month for traveling thanks to generally dry weather conditions. Domestic travel activity remains low during the first half of December until the beginning of winter school holidays around December 23. The downsides of a visit in winter are the relatively short days (sunset is around 4:30pm in Tokyo) and the barren state of the vegetation. From around December 29 some tourist attractions close down for the New Year holidays. The ski season starts in December.

Cuti - Cuti Malaysia : KL to Penang

During the long break of Syawal, we decided to get out from KL to the north by driving. Pasal kitorang tak pernah drive ke Penang, sibuklah meng-goggle.

Inilah route yang kita guna. Dan aplikasi Waze sangat membantu.

Kami sampai kat Penang around 3PM gitu. Sesat2 juga tersalah masuk exit ajaran sesat si Waze. Hihihi.

After check-in, kami keluar untuk cari makan dan beli tiket ferry ke Langkawi. Return tix MYR140 pax.

After selesai makan, terus drive ke Batu Feringghi cari HRC. Jauh juga tapi cantik dan happening.

Thinking Of Osaka ~ And The Tumbling MYR

Its been two month since my last travel outside Malaysia, and I'm already feeling restless. The only BIG obstacle hindering me from flying again is the plunging value of the ringgit.

As of today rate

The Malaysian ringgit has tumbled to a new low since it was unpegged from its fixed rate of 3.80 in 2005. As of 4.30pm, the ringgit was valued at 3.9083 to the US dollar.

The ringgit has been falling at an accelerated rate in recent months from around RM3.20 to US$1 a year ago.

Among the factors attributed for the weak currency include falling global oil prices which has impacted the country's revenue as well as political instability.

How sad. Hopefully, our ringgit will bounce back to its original value.

But, my heart still yearning for Osaka and you should know why.... or at least understand. Here, let me share with you my obsession. 

The third largest city in Japan, Osaka bespeaks its own charm. Despite being ravaged by World War II, it has risen from the ashes a Japanese metropolis which has all the hallmarks of modernity without forgoing its historical and cultural roots.

Osaka Castle

This is easily the city’s most famous attraction. The construction of this castle played an important role in unifying the whole of Japan. However, the castle you see today is actually a recreation of the original castle built in the 1580s. The observatory on the 8th floor grants panoramic views of the whole city. Also, the accompanying park is one of the best places for cherry blossom viewing. 

Shitennoji Temple

This temple was the first Buddhist temple constructed in Japan and it is the oldest temple site in the whole country too, built in 593 AD. It has burnt down several times throughout history but each restoration has stayed true to the 6th century original. The temple has a five storey pagoda, an aged stone gate dating to the 13th century and lush typical Japanese gardens. The locals hold various events and festivals at this site each year.

Spa World

A must try when visiting Japan is the onsen (Japanese hot springs). Spa World isn’t your typical onsen. There are different themed baths; from Persian and Balinese to Ancient Roman and even Atlantis, besides the usual collection of Japanese baths. It is open 24 hours a day and is host to a great many of facilities and amenities such as a gym, amusement pool, food court, salon and a hotel.

Nakanoshima

This is a little narrow island on the Kyu-Yodo River which serves as a cultural hub of Osaka. The Osaka Science Museum, Museum of Oriental Ceramics and the Osaka Central Public Hall are all located here. Visitors can easily spend the whole day here to venture through all the museums and historical buildings. The parks in the area make for excellent walks or even cycling as there are pedestrian paths throughout the park.

As a Japanse food lover, I will never get hungry here.

Osaka Dotonbori

Tenka no daidokoro (the nation’s kitchen) is Osaka’s nickname. Osaka’s glorious reputation for all the foodie delights precedes itself and Dotonbori is the gastronomical heart of the city. It’s said that even a month here isn’t enough to sample everything such as the famous takoyaki (octopus dumpling) and okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake of sorts), both born in Osaka. The bright neon lights help to guide visitors to the best restaurants and food vendors around.

Addicted to shopping spree?

HEP Five Ferris Wheel

Situated in the Umeda District which is also beside Osaka Station, this giant Ferris wheel sits aloft a vast shopping mall. This is another great spot for skyline views of the city. The 15 minute air conditioned gondola ride is most comfortable and is known to be a popular romantic spot for local couples at night time. The shopping mall is home to various Western and Japanese boutiques as well as a large arcade. 

Nipponbashi Denden Town

Japan is known to be a mecca for high tech electronics which usually come at steep prices too. At Nipponbashi, this is the only place in Japan where buyers can actually haggle for their electronics. This is the electronics haven in Osaka which also caters to many home appliances as well. There are many anime shops too making this place very quintessentially pop cultural Japan. 

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

This is one of the largest aquariums in the world which is famous for the presence of its great whale sharks. These ferocious creatures aren’t the meat eating savages we know them as but are gentle plankton eating sharks. Apart from all the various species of fish, there are also arctic penguins and seals. The tank walls extend to the ceilings making visitors feel as though there are under the sea with all the marine life too. 

Umeda Sky Building

It may not be the tallest building in Osaka (coming in only at number 12), but it’s the city’s most iconic. Offices occupy most of the building but the ‘Floating Garden’ on the rooftop observatory guarantees sweeping views of the city. There are plenty of restaurants to dine at, whether it is day or night time to enjoy the view. The basement features a 20th century market which showcases the stark difference to the modern marvel above.
