I will google more about this beauty later. I just blog it first so I wouldnt forget about it.

UPDATE: 15/07/2013

Giethoorn is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 5 km southwest of Steenwijk.
Giethoorn used to be a carfree town known in the Netherlands as "Venice of the North"[1] or "Venice of the Netherlands".[2] It became locally famous, especially after 1958, when the Dutch film maker Bert Haanstra made his famous comedy "Fanfare" there. In the old part of the village, there were no roads (nowadays there is a cycling path), and all transport was done by water over one of the many canals. The lakes in Giethoorn were formed by peat unearthing.
Giethoorn was founded by fugitives from the Mediterranean region in around AD 1230.[3] Giethoorn was a separate municipality until 1973, when it became part of Brederwiede.[4]

You can click here for more info about Giethoorn.

Giethoorn was founded by a group of fugitives. They came around 1230 from regions bordering the Mediteranean. These first inhabitants found masses of horns of wild goats, which had probably died in 1170 during the flood. They called their settlement Geytenhorn (geit = goat), ulimately becoming Giethoorn (dialect goat = geit = giet).

The village owes it characteristic appearance to peatdigging. The peatdiggers dug up the peat-soil at the places that most suited them, mixed it in a trough and spread it out on the land to dry. The result could be cut as peat. This peatdigging led to the formation of large and small lakes. To transport the peat ditches and canals were excavated. Many houses are as it were built on little islands, reached through a high bridge. All this imparts to Giethoorn a beauty unequalled anywhere else.

Getting excited?

~ I am ready to bet that you have picked this village from a road map or atlas as most people have never heard of it. This is a village where you will never find a single road, because all and I mean it, all transport is by boat. Actually, the village consists of two parts and it is the old part of the village where there are no roads. Ouch, there are some cycling paths there. All visitors are welcome to enjoy the beauty of scenery whilst on a Whisper Boat (a special electric powered boat, which makes no noise). Most of these boats can transport up to 8 adults.

Rail travel is the obvious answer, trains leave Amsterdam Centraal, platform 14b at 27 minutes past each hour. You change trains at Hilversum for Meppel. Second class day return is 34.30€. From the station you would have to take the local bus, unable to find timetable information, to Giethoorn: a distance of 15 kilometres..

~ It is a very nice area to visit yes, but it is a bit of a trek and will take about 2.5-3hrs travelling with public transport and several connections

The cost is €29.90 by train (return ticket) and about €5.00 one-way (cheapest price based on strippenkaart) for the bus from Zwolle to Geithoorn

You can see the connections, times, prices etc for yourself here on the public transport planner which is also in English http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/

If you want something quaint, picturesque and closer by the Amsterdam then perhaps consider visiting Volendam and then taking the ferry (short ride) accross to Marken.

There are tour companies which do deals for trips there but it is also easy to get to by public transport for yourself (use the same site as I refered to before) and takes max 45mins by public transport (and no connections if you take bus 116 which drives directly from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Volendam) and costs €3.41 one way (again based on a strippenkaart)

Both are very popular tourist destinations and easy to get to from Amsterdam.
